ZŠEM seminar: Managing workplace conflict - Randy Richards

O KONFERENCIJI

Seminar Overview:
In this introductory program for managers and others, you will learn to manage conflict in a healthy and productive manner. Everyday we face a wide variety of conflicts. Conflicts over what happened or conflicts over what should happen or conflicts over what we think will happen. Conflicts over what is to be gained and by whom, or who is to what and by when. Conflicts over how we think we were treated or how others think we treated them. Conflict above, below us, next to us and remote from us.

We are not trying to eliminate conflict. We want and needorganizational conflict. Conflict is critical to making effective decisions but
mismanaged it undermines the decisions and damages productive relationships. Instead of the conflicts improving our organizations, they make it worse. The problem for us is how can we benefit from the positive aspects of conflict and not suffer from the negative side effects.

Improper management includes treating conflicts like they are battles for supremacy, blaming others, passive aggressive tactics, conflict avoidance and accommodating others while sacrificing our own legitimate interests. We experience this everyday. We are stressed, frustrated, sometimes angry but more often resigned. We become resigned to thinking that this is just how things are and that there is little we can do about it.

Fortunately, we are wrong. Most conflicts can be managed, even resolved, much more effectively than is occurring in most organizations today. Employees, skillful in analyzing conflicts and selecting the right management approach, increase bottom line performance across the entire organization. For those organizations that understand the profitability of sustained, long term relationships among all stakeholders, skillful conflict management is a must. Skillful management of conflicts also reduces stress and tension at work and allows people to relax in conflict situations confident that they can manage it so that the issue will be dealt with properly and the relationship will be enhanced.
Unfortunately this is not a skill we are born with. Fortunately, it can be learned. With this workshop you will begin that learning process.

PROGRAM

SEMINAR FORMAT

Part One:
Conflicts occur as a process of unfolding and successive episodes like the scenes of a play. They follow a pattern. Learning the pattern helps us to identify those points where we might intervene to change the dynamic toward integrative solutions.

In Part One, we learn by:
• Telling our conflict stories
• Examining the paradox of conflict
• Working through the implication of the meaning of conflict
• Applying the dynamic of the conflict episode to our stories
• Choosing how to respond to threats about things I care about
• Strategies of response: Distribution or Integration

Part Two:
In seeking to resolve or manage the conflict, I can set off on one or two paths. Will I try to maximize my chances of ‘winning’ at the expense of the other party’s concerns or will I try to create a solution that incorporates both of our concerns into the solution. Maybe I make this choice consciously or maybe unconsciously, but in either case my behavior in response to the perceived threat has consequences for both the conflict issue and the relationship with the other person. View in terms of long term consequences, we encourage the development of integrative/collaborative solutions.
• Self-assessment of my own strategies
• Distributive and integrative intentions reviewed
• Distributive tactical choices and techniques
• Integrative tactical choices and techniques
• In search of the integrative space, the superior strategy for the long term
• Preferred solution methods for the main kinds of conflicts
• Take Aways - what can I use tomorrow on the job
